BEFORE MOVING

Notify Post Office of new address 30 days in advance, and send out change of address forms to family, friends, magazine subscriptions, finance companies, etc.

Arrange packing and moving date with movers if using professional services.

If moving out of area, obtain medical, dental and veterinary records and notify schools to have transcripts forwarded.

Return items borrowed from neighbours, library, and collect those you’ve loaned.

Take inventory and arrange your assets into three categories: items to move into your new house; items to be put in storage and items you’re going to sell or give away.

Wrap breakables in clean paper (newspaper will mark) and label box FRAGILE (which means ‘handle with care.’)

Label packed boxes with the name of the room their contents will be unloaded to.

Do not overpack boxes with books (30 pounds maximum).

Tape cardboard on all mirrors and glass items for extra protection. Remove chimes and pendulums from clocks.

Do not water plants just before moving. Disconnect all your appliances.

Arrange for babysitting on moving day if you have small children.

To ensure security, have the locks changed on your new home.

Hold a garage sale—it’s a great way to get rid of all your never-used items.

MOVING DAY

Leave elastic sheets on mattresses to protect them during moving.

Do not pack valuables such as jewelry, cash, collectibles and important documents—carry these with you.

Defrost any refrigerators and freezers that are being moved.

Make a final check with someone else to ensure everything has been moved. Don’t forget the curtains if they weren’t part of the sale of your home!

Change addresses on all pet tags.

Undo everything you did above.
