McCleery Golf Course |
McCleery, with its many water hazards, gently sloping
fairways and large greens is nestled on the north banks of the Fraser River in
southwest Vancouver. Featuring well sculptured and meticulously maintained
fairways and greens, Canadian architect Ted Baker designed this par 71, 18-hole
course that offers a target-style golf challenge.
With its narrow fairways, the advantage will be on the side of the accurate
golfer to challenge this beautiful course graced by mature trees.
McCleery boasts a very active junior instruction program which helps to get
young people started in the game.
With a first-class driving range, practice putting greens and a complete staff
of C.P.G.A. instructors, McCleery is the place to go to improve all facets of
your game.
Surrounded by beautiful mature trees, the fairways and greens of McCleery Golf
Course offer a challenging game in an inspiring setting. The golf course is
located on the banks of the Fraser River adjacent to Vancouver’s only remaining
farmland.
History
This property was originally known as the McCleery Farm and owned by pioneering
brothers Samuel and Fitzgerald McCleery from 1862. The McCleerys were the first
pioneer family to settle in British Columbia. Remnants of their farmhouse
foundation are marked today with a bronze plaque on the north end of the golf
course. The Park Board purchased the land in 1956 and developed it as a golf
course over the next few years.
The McCleery Golf Course was completely redeveloped and officially rededicated
in 1996. One of the great granddaughters of the original pioneering McCleerys,
Kathy Shave, who helped unveil the new golf course in 1959, returned to help
mark this special occasion at a place with huge historical significance.
