Guest Review of the Holiday Inn Vancouver Downtown
July 16, 2011
After a cruise in May, we wanted to stay in Vancouver for the weekend to
explore the city for the first time. The room we had was large and very
comfortable. The staff was very friendly, and holding our luggage on our
last day was no problem (as well as very secure). The gentleman running
the gift shop (which seriously contains any item a person could possibly
want) was very friendly and helpful. The Holiday Inn on Howe proved to
be a wonderful location for a exploring the city.
*The hop-on/hop-off trolley stops right in front of the hotel
(recommended by the gentleman running the gift shop), which was a really
fun way to see the sights. We ended up going around on both routes, and
made a point to go through
Stanley Park twice. The first day it was a
bit rainy so we went back the second day and were able to hop off and
enjoy the beauty of the parks
*The very convenient Bus #6 runs down Davie Street, which is full of
restaurants and shops. We took it to visit the wonderful Rain City Grill
(an exceptional dining experience).
*One of the best brunches I've ever had was found right behind the hotel
at the Twisted Fork Bistro. Yes, the neighborhood gets a little, um,
interesting as you go around the block behind the hotel, but we felt
very safe. Expect a wait at the Twisted Fork - totally worth it.
If we visited Vancouver again, I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

While all downtown Vancouver hotels are expensive, the Holiday Inn on
Howe Street is in a great location and convenient to almost every part
of downtown (unlike those very expensive hotels on the water). While it
is not cheap, it is not overpriced for the location and the nice rooms.
The beds are lovely, the staff are splendid and the hotel is clean; the
parking lot is easily accessible.
However, if you stay there and are a light sleeper, ask for a room far
away from the elevator as I was kept awake most of the night, not by the
guests coming and going, but by the elevator hydraulics that I couldn't
hear until I was already in bed and the evening was late, ie, too late
to change my room without a lot of inconvenience. I must add that the
hotel management was very responsive to my complaint after the fact. Ask
for a room away from the elevators.

The location is great, a hop, skip and jump away from restaurants and
night spots. But that proximity to the party zone means it can get noisy
in some rooms. I had this problem the first night, which kept me awake.
I asked to be switched to a different room the next day, and that was
much better, even though it was the night of Game 7. The staff are
polite and friendly. Kudos to two in particular - Julia and Katie at the
front desk. These girls have such a wonderful attitude, "can-do"
attitude. When I told a male staff about the noisy room and asked for a
change, he said he would tell the night auditor, and added that I would
have the problem in any room that night because of Game 7. When I
mentioned it a little later to Julia, she immediately made arrangements
to switch rooms and have my things moved. Katie, who checked me in, saw
me look at some maps on the stand, and immediately produced a much
better one, asked me what I was interested in, and gave very detailed
directions, and suggested places that she thought I would like. I hope
the management realize what an asset these girls are to the hotel. If
not for them, I would have given this place three stars overall.

The service at this hotel is fantastic! Nice, informative, quick. We
especially likes Candy in the hotel cafe. The location, as far as
getting to everything, is great also...never took our car out of the
garage. HOWEVER...our room was on the back side, which looked over a
filthy alley and the back side if two dive bars. Even though we were on
the 5th floor, we could hear all the "colorful" conversations, watch the
men use the "outdoor facilities" and hear the bottles being dumped into
the bins (several times a night). One street over is a street with a
very loud night life. Things really don't start getting quiet until past
3:30 AM! If you plan on staying here, see if you can stay on a quiet
side, if they have one. Weekdays may be quieter as well, but who knows.

I stayed for 5 nights from June 5, to June 10, 2011. I could not believe
how noisy it was. I showed up because i could not stay at the Sheraton
Wall Centre for 5 days, only 4 of the 5 days were open so i gave the
Downtown Holiday Inn a show. I got fast check in service. But when i got
to the room, it was hald the size of a Sheraton room... The bathroom was
small, and the sink was near the closet. But i had a 2 double beds that
i am use too. But what grossed me out was the view. I swear there was a
hoarder across the way that was storing their world on the roof of a
business. Plus there is a couple bars/restaurants and people are out
back smoking cigarettes in the late evening to 2am.
What was really annoying was that i thought i was going to pay $140 a
night.... as i had a pamphlet that said a $140 a night that was given to
my company on late may. So when my room came to only $144/nite using my
BCAA, So I wonder if i got the business rate - would i have gotten a
better room? I like the location but i was not a fan of the parking, and
internet. Internet times out alot, and parking was really tight. Plus i
would have liked Valet parking. So it was disheartening for me to see i
was 2 blocks from Sheraton Wall Centre. What was sick to see was a old
dude walking around in his under-wear outside the hotel.... and then
being arrested by Vancouver PD.
